Program and policy within the Fire Safety Policy Unit aims to shape the rules, systems, and standards that prevent fire-related deaths, injuries, and property loss in NSW.

Program and policy develop guidance documents, in collaboration with subject matter experts, that aim to reduce the inconsistent application of fire safety requirements across NSW.

Program and policy use evidence to guide the development of policy by:

  • relying on the analysis of fire incident data and discernment of trends
  • identifying development types and building classifications that present a high level of risk to the community and firefighters
  • evaluating whether existing policy settings adequately reduce risk
  • supporting targeted reform, where necessitated.
