Maroubra Fire Station celebrates 100 years of operation

Fire and Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) Maroubra Fire Station today commemorates a special milestone,100 years of operation.
Several dignitaries, including FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell; Parliamentary Secretary and Member for Liverpool, Charishma Kaliyanda; Randwick City Council Mayor, Dylan Parker; as well as current and former members of FRNSW, have attended a special function at the station to celebrate the achievement.
Staff and students from Maroubra Bay Public School also attended, performing the national anthem at the start of the event.
When the fire station was built in 1924, the Maroubra crew operated a Garford Type 75 appliance, which could pump 250 gallons or 1,100 litres of water per minute. Today, the station is equipped with a modern fire engine capable of pumping almost four times that amount.
Though firefighting equipment and operations have evolved over the years, Maroubra Fire Station has been a constant presence and vital support, serving the community in various forms.
During a brief closure of the station between 1949 and 1956, the station’s billiards room served as a mail sorting room for the Maroubra Post Office. It was also used as an election polling station in 1956, before once again re-opening as an operational fire station in 1957 to meet the demands of a growing area.
Most recently, in September, the crew responded to a ‘6th alarm structure fire’ at a paper storage facility in Matraville. The response was significant, drawing approximately 20 FRNSW trucks and 80 firefighters to tackle the blaze.
