Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) investigators are continuing efforts to determine the cause of a fatal gas leak at a Riverstone restaurant in Sydney’s west.
At approximately 9:20am today, FRNSW responded to calls about a suspected gas leak in a restaurant in Garfield Road, with reports that two people were unresponsive at the scene.
On arrival, FRNSW found that two people had been pulled out of the building.
One of them was unconscious, unresponsive and unfortunately could not be revived by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Six people were evacuated from residences above the restaurant, as a precaution.
A number of people have been transported to hospital for exposure to an unknown substance at this stage.
Five of them are police officers and another, an occupant of the building.
FRNSW specialist hazardous materials (Hazmat) response experts, wearing protective clothing including breathing apparatus, are currently on scene, conducting investigations.
FRNSW Hazmat specialists are also carrying a suite of gas and atmospheric detectors, taking air samples to measure air quality and to determine the cause of the incident.
FRNSW has rendered the area safe and will remain on site to assist NSW Police with their investigations.
